The new translation system helps keeping translated pages in sync with the English version. It automatically marks edited paragraphs in the English pages on the translated pages as stale and helps translators to update only the changed lines. With the latest version update of the Wiki software, we can finally leverage the translation system without making tradeoffs. On previous versions we wouldn't have been able to use VisualEditor simultaneously.

We can't migrate automatically to the new translation system, but need to migrate pages individually to not loose the current translated pages. This document is about organizing this migration effort. Feel free to edit this document if you see errors or if you have input and want to discuss something. Discussion happens in the #wiki channel on Discord and on Matrix in #ddnet-wiki:matrix.org. Editors might be directly contacted to see who can help out.

Timeline

Note: Wiki Maintainance Mode on Saturday-Sunday this week. Meaning some pages/translation doesn't work as expected.

Proposed timeline:

  • [Zwelf] until Fr, 2023-02-09: prepares Templates for translation
  • until Sa, 2023-02-10: Coordinate with translators who is responsible for migrating which pages. Mark them as bold below and assign pages.
  • [Zwelf] Sa, 2023-02-11 12:00-14:00 (UTC): Archive all translation, and enable new translation system on english pages
  • until Sa 2023-02-26 12:00, Migrate original content from translated pages to english version (and figure out which pages are necessary):
  • Sa, 2023-02-11 - 2023-02-26: Translators migrate assigned pages
  • Su, 2023-02-27 - Su, 2023-03-05: Zwelf/Ryozuki look through remaining work and complete it as best effort

How translators can help

During the forth step above. The wiki pages needing translation will be linked in the "Scope" section below and already assigned to translators with links to both the page with the previous translation (like this) and a link to the page where the translation should be entered (like this). If you are available please write in the #wiki channel or contact Zwelf directly (e.g. via Special:EmailUser).

The timeframe where the translation migration is two weeks long.

After the Translation migration ended by translators. Zwelf and Ryozuki will look through remaining work and complete it as in a best effort.
